The Story Behind the American Flag

The American flag began as a symbol of 13 colonies joining together to form a new nation.

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted the first official national flag. The resolution called for 13 alternating red and white stripesand 13 white stars on a blue field, representing “a new constellation.”

The resolution did not say exactly how the stars should be arranged. Because of that, early American flags appeared in several different designs. The familiar circle of 13 stars is often connected to Betsy Ross, although historians have never found conclusive proof that she designed or sewed the first American flag.

As the country grew, the flag changed.

At first, Congress added both a star and a stripe whenever a new state entered the Union. This created the 15-star, 15-stripe flag that flew over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.

After a night of British bombardment in September 1814, the flag was still flying over the fort. The sight inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that later became “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Congress soon realized that adding a stripe for every new state would make the flag increasingly difficult to use. In 1818, lawmakers returned the number of stripes to 13 and established the system still followed today: one star for every state, with a new star added on the July 4 following a state’s admission.

The current 50-star flag became official on July 4, 1960, after Hawaii joined the Union.

The 13 stripes represent the original colonies that declared independence and became the first states.

The 50 stars represent the 50 states united as one country. The original description of the stars as a “new constellation” reflected the idea of a new nation taking its place in the world.

🎨 What do the colors mean?

The 1777 resolution did not assign an official meaning to red, white and blue. The meanings commonly used today came from the description of the Great Seal of the United States in 1782:

🔴 Red represents hardiness and valor.

White represents purity and innocence.

🔵 Blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.

Together, the flag tells two stories. Its stripes remember the nation’s beginnings, while its stars show how the country grew. Over time, it has become a powerful symbol of unity, liberty, sacrifice and the continuing effort to live up to America’s founding ideals.
