When Does Daylight Savings Time Start in 2024?

The clocks “fall back” when Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at 2:00 AM local time. This means we gain an extra hour of sleep but experience shorter daylight hours in the evening.

Why Do We Observe Daylight Savings Time?

Originally introduced to conserve energy and make better use of natural daylight, DST dates back to World War I and has been widely adopted across the U.S. (except in Hawaii and most of Arizona). The extra evening daylight is meant to reduce electricity use and encourage outdoor activities.

Tips to Adjust to the Time Change

1. Go to bed earlier a few days before the change to minimize sleep disruption.
2. Expose yourself to natural light in the morning to help reset your body’s internal clock.
3. Limit caffeine and screen time before bedtime for a smoother transition.
4. Adjust your schedule gradually by shifting meal and bedtime routines by 15-30 minutes.

Will Daylight Savings Time Become Permanent?

In recent years, there has been ongoing debate about making Daylight Savings Time permanent. Some states have passed legislation to stay on DST year-round, but federal approval is required. The Sunshine Protection Act, which aims to end the time change, has gained traction but is still awaiting final approval.
